Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings With Special Guests The Heavy & DJ She
LIve in Vancouver at The Commodore Ballroom Sunday June 20th, 2010.
Tickets Available here.
On April 6th, 2010, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will mark history with ther fourth album I Learned the Hard Way. Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded in its entirety on an old Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax Records. Sharon’s voice, never stronger, evokes at once the raw power of Tina Turner, the moaning soulfulness of Mavis Staples, the rhythmic swagger of James Brown, and the melodic command of Aretha. From the lush Philly-soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke style “Mama Don¹t Like My Man” at the tail, the band dances seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. This is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest and is a welcome breath of fresh air. But most of all, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ I Learned the Hard Way is a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.

Red Bull Thre3style: The Infinite Playlist
The tools: Two Technics 1200 Turntables, one Rane TTM57 mixer, years of sleepless nights djing, terabytes of tracks and fifteen minutes of sonic infamy. That is the pre-requisite for 80 of Canada’s best DJ’s as they sort through millions of songs to prepare for the ultimate live DJ party competition, Red Bull Thre3Style. The goal: Sort through their entire music collection, drop a 15 minute set of at least 3 genres of music where the mix becomes theirs and theirs alone, sending the dancefloor into a pulsating mob..
While the art of the DJ continues to evolve it remains true to one objective: rock the party. Hosted by Canadian omni-genre musician Curtis Santiago, Red Bull Thre3Style will gather the top DJs at each of the 10 stops with hopes of becoming the best party rocker in Canada. The challenge: deliver 15 minutes of sonic infamy that incorporates a minimum of three genres of music. The constant: the crowd. With over 10,000 people who laid down some fancy footwork with the 80 DJs performing in 2009 the ultimate live party competition for 2010 are high!
Evolution of Red Bull Thre3style
In 2010 Red Bull Thre3Style is a competition to crown the World;s most versatile Party-Rock DJ . The industry’s top talent – music writers, musicians, promoters, bloggers and headlining DJ’s - will judge the DJs and evaluate each performer based on creativity, track selection, skills, stage presence, and audience response. The winner of each stop will move on to the National Final set to take place in Toronto on Saturday, March 13, 2010 as part of Canadian Music Week. The winner of the Canadian National Final will earn a trip to play at the World Final in Paris, France in December 2010 and compete against winners from 13 countries and be crowned the first Global Red Bull Thre3Style Champion.
