WHO? Tara Reeves aka DJ She
WHAT? Owner (DJ She), Host (Get Grounded TV)
WHERE? All around town… Vancity!
Out of all the athletes, celebrities, and talented individuals that I met throughout the Olympic break, the most fascinating person I met would have to be one that was in my backyard the whole time – Tara Reeves aka DJ She. Working at the Robson Nike Store, it was the norm to have a DJ spinning sick beats on their turntables… but a female DJ!? What?!?! Definitely not a commonality. Curious, I quickly chatted it up with this crazy self-proclaimed chameleon…
Initially inspired the music her mother listened to and the rave culture in the late 90s, Tara quickly became infatuated with DJ culture. She was “that kid” who, at the end of the night, was always dying to ask the DJ a billion questions. Quickly, she started collecting hip hop CDs, building a music collection and tried spinning on her friend’s turntables for fun. While in Calgary, she bought her own equipment and sought out DJ Leanne online and later moved to Vancouver to study at the Rhythm Institute, a DJing school. When she applied at Beatstreet, the DJ’s version of a candy store, she was hired on the spot. She has been droppin’ beats all around Vancity since then.
Tara’s most recent conquest would be at the Red Bull 3 Style, an ambitious DJing competition that is held to find out “Who is the best partyrocker?!”. Although she did not win, Tara was actually the first female DJ in history to compete in the Red Bull 3 Style. And, boy, did she ever prove that girls can be just as bad as the boys!
Besides being a female DJ, Tara sets herself apart from others through her diverse taste in music. I’ve listened to Tara DJ many times and she has something on hand that will cater to everyone’s tastes in music yet still manages to stay true to herself. Her ability to mix everything from funk, 80s, old school hip hop and R&B demonstrates her ability to push boundaries, maintain an open mind, and nurture her love for all things art-related.
Aside from music, Tara is also a host for Grounded TV – a site encompassing art, culture, and activism – and has been a chef just over twelve years (have I mentioned how talented this woman is?!). One of her favourite spots in Vancouver would be at The Wallflower on Main & Broadway or Fortune Sound Club (147 E Pender), which, she boasts (and I would have to agree), is the best damn club in Vancouver. As far as fashion goes, Tara is a straight up jeans and t-shirt kind of gal with an unhealthy sneaker addiction. She would describe her style as androgynous – nothing overly feminine or too boyish. Comfort for the win.
And last but not least, how does this amazingly talented woman show her inner kitty? Simple and sweet – confidence in everyday life and having fun.
DJ She will also be DJing this Thursday, March 18th, 2010 at The Met (320 Abbott St) – check it!
