King by name, King by nature; King Britt is a truly pioneering musician who is widely recognized a member of the royal elite of the Dance Music world. Based in Philadelphia, King Britt has been breaking the traditional boundaries and forging a unique path as a producer, musician, DJ, label boss and media revolutionary for over 20 years.

Taking influence from a wide spectrum of musical genres, as well a number of seminal producers such as Trevor Horn, Quincy Jones and Arif Marden, King has always found a way to escape the strictures of any single category of music by working across genres such deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech. Releasing his first record (E-Culture – ‘Tribal Confusion’) through Strictly Rhythm in 1990, King went onto tour worldwide with Digable Planets – the Grammy award winning hip-hop fusion band – whilst continuing to develop his love of Dance Music culture and laying the foundations for his prodigal solo career.

In 1994, alongside Josh Wink he launched Ovum Recordings and also formed Sylk130 – a collective of Philadelphia’s finest musical talent including Lady Alma, Alison Crockette and Ursula Rucker. He produced Sylk130′s first album (‘When The Funk Hits The Fan’) and licensed it to Sony through his own Ovum label. ‘When The Funk Hits The Fan’ went onto sell over 500,000 copies and essentially provided the blueprint for the Philly Neo-Soul resurgence. King also produced Sylk130 second album (‘Re-Members Only’) – which featured the likes of Alison Moyet (Yazoo), Martin Fry (ABC), Grover Washington Jr., De La Soul and Kathy Sledge – and also the ‘Lets Make A Record’ LP for Sister Gertrude Morgan.

In addition to these achievements, King is one of the world’s most respected remixers. He has added his unique touch to hugely diverse range of artists such from Miles Davis, The O’Jays and Curtis Mayfield through to Macy Gray, Solange, Femi Kuti and Everything But The Girl. King Britt’s remix of ‘Contemplation’ (Josh One) was nominated for the Dancestar Remix Of The Year Award and maintains its killer status upon the most discerning dance floors. King has also scored and underscored music for films, TV series and commercials (Miami Vice, Rolex, Mini, and True Blood) while in 2007 he became the first DJ to be awarded The Pew Fellowship – one of the most prestigious grants for creative arts in U.S. King is also a Creative Cultural Ambassador for his hometown of Philadelphia.

As a DJ, King Britt is hugely versatile – a chameleon behind the decks. Taking inspirations from the likes of David Mancuso, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Francois K, King plays right across a broad range of genres, using his experience and creativity to fit the demands of any dance floor. He has toured extensively across throughout Europe, the U.S. and the Far East as well as rocking premier night spots throughout the world.

Most recently King Britt has released the ‘Intricate Beauty’ LP – a solo artist album for Nervous Records – and is also collaborating with Rucyl Mills on the Saturn Never Sleeps project which incorporates, primarily, a unique live show fusing audio and visuals into a thought provoking world of sight and sound, and is also an independent record label. Britt has also recently produced the new Bedouin Soundclash LP, a track for the new King Sunny Ade album and a number of remixes for the likes of Preservation Hall Jazz Ensemble feat. Mos Def, Glitch Mobb, Jay Haze and Dilouya.

Saturn Never Sleeps

Saturn Never Sleeps was originally created by music producer King Britt and artist Rucyl for two performances specifically dedicated to the music and sound of Sun-Ra. Inspired by the works of classic electronic innovators like Herbie Hancock, Raymond Scott and Delia Derbyshire, the experiment began in July 2009. NINA SKY: Natalie and Nicole Albino (born in New York City) are identical twin sisters who sing under the name “Nina Sky”. They are half-Puerto Rican and half-Dominican.

Their parents moved from Puerto Rico and were divorced when the girls were very young. The twins’ mother remarried with a DJ, who also happened to be Puerto Rican. They grew up in the Queens and Roosevelt Island sections of New York.

Since their stepfather worked as a DJ, the twins were influenced by different types of music. When the sisters were only 7 years old, they wrote their first song, “Sisters”, and by the time they were 10, they already knew that they wanted to become singers.

The twins’ parents were very supportive of their daughters’ ambitions. The stepfather even gave them guitar and drum lessons. They were taken to auditions and, on some occasions, they even performed on some showcases. The sisters wanted to come up with a name of their own and by using the first two syllables of their names “Ni” and “Na”, came up with Nina. They then added Sky, which for them represented “the sky’s the limit”.

They continued to go to school and, in their spare time, worked as DJ’s. In the year 2000, they met the Jettsonz, a pair of music producers who helped them develop their own sound.

Jean Grae (real name Tsidi Ibrahim) will always be a New Yorker by heart. Born in Cape Town, South Africa on November 26, 1976, the
daughter of South African jazz musicians (her father and mother are the celebrated musicians Sathima Bea Benjamin and Abdullah
Ibrahim). Jean learned an appreciation for all genres of music at an early age. She attended the High School of Performing Arts as a vocal major and was later accepted to New York University as a Music Business major. Disenchanted by the classroom settings, Jean decided early on that she was more of a hands-on learner. During high school she learned to read and arrange music as well as learn classical and choral arrangements, giving her a good foundation on becoming a hip-hop writer and producer.

Jean Grae (then known as What? What?) was recruited by a rapper named Ocean, who formed a group called Natural Resource in the mid-90s. In 1997, Natural Resource founded their own record label, Makin’ Records, and released the 12” single, “Negro League Baseball”, which became an underground hip-hop classic. They followed with several other 12”s including “I Love This
World”, “They Lied” and “Bum Deal”. In addition to writing and producing with Natural Resource, Jean Grae also produced singles for Makin’ Records artists Pumpkin Head, Don Scavone and The Bad Seed. Jean Grae’s Cookies or Comas Mixtape released June 2011, Cake or Death Album release Sept 2011.

Natural Resource broke up in 1998 due to creative differences, but the exposure with the group worked towards Jean’s benefit. Changing her name from What? What? to Jean Grae, she was asked to appear on a number of songs with artists such as Herbaliser, High & Mighty, the Mumia 911 Project, the Hip-Hop For Respect project, Mr. Len, Da Beatminerz and Masta Ace.

In the summer of 2002, Jean Grae released her debut album, Attack of the Attacking Things. The album featured the assistance of Da Beatminerz, Mr. Len, and Masta Ace. The album received much critical and fan acclaim as one of the best female hip-hop albums since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This Week followed in 2004. Jean Grae’s Cookies or Comas Mixtape released June 2011, Cake or Death Album release Sept 2011.

5 tenacious Vancouver DJs in Utopia’s all-female lineup

Now residing in Vancouver, this East Coast native is a heavy hitter on the DJ scene. Her credentials read like a laundry list of formal accomplishments. The former manager of Canada’s number-one record store, Beatstreet Records, is the current host and creative director of Vancouver-based Grounded TV; the promoter and founder of Jane Blaze Productions; and Canada’s first and only female DJ to compete in the worldwide Red Bull 3Style competition.

She has been chalked up alongside some of the world’s most credible DJs, including Betti Forde, Cut Chemist, DJ Ayers, Queen Latifah, Kool DJ Red Alert and Flip-Out, while her corporate client list is a mile long with brands like H&M, Artizia, Nike and Red Bull.

Hitting all the crucial erogenous zones from funk to disco and soul to hip-hop, DJ She crosses the genres of West Coast and Chicago House to create her own brand of mid-tempo madness. She spins driving, dense mixes that capture your attention from the first beat. Whether she’s flowing “Art of Beatz” into your bones or soothing you with “Immersion,” DJ She proves she has nothing to prove.

The Utopia Festival: Women in Digital Culture will “stage an intervention” for the male-dominated DJ and electronic music scene this Saturday, March 5 with performances by the likes of DJ She (pictured).

It’s more disorienting than laser tag, but the motley assortment of strangers-no-more keep bumping bits with a practiced chaos, paying little attention to what’s going on as long as the music moves them. It might be silly, but rhythm really is a dancer, and lo and behold, it’s a woman behind the turntables, pulling the puppet strings, spinning these club kids into a melting-hot frenzy.

When DJ Betti Forde (aka Maren Hancock) started spinning in Vancouver in 1998, women in the DJ and electronic music scene were an anomaly in a testosterone sea. Thirteen years later, precious little has changed, hence the need for Utopia Festival: Women in Digital Culture. It’s a unique day-long conference that promises to unfold like a stylized mullet — business up front, party in the back, with an assortment of practical discussions, skill-building workshops (DJ 101), a keynote address from Canada’s electronic music icon, Peaches, followed by a wild late-night party showcasing some of the best women music makers in the business.

Peaches, Betti Forde, and Vancouver’s own DJ She (aka Tara Reeves) spoke with WE about making it as DIY artists, breaking down barriers, and why a festival like Utopia is more relevant than ever.

DJ She: ‘Female DJs in the industry are just as good as male DJs’

Back when she worked as the manager at Beatstreet Records, Tara Reeves, best known for her musical work as DJ She, recalls a male-dominated record store with occasional female customers.

“From the inside, it’s definitely dominated by men,” she says of Vancouver’s DJ scene. “That said, I feel like my peers that are female DJs in the industry are just as good as male DJs.”

While skill sets between genders may be similar, male DJs tend to hold more regular club residencies than women, she adds, resulting in higher male visibility.

Reeves doesn’t feel like she’s at a career disadvantage because of gender, but she acknowledges that women often need to work twice as hard as men to get to the same place. And she’s no stranger to hard work.

At 27, she’s opened for major North American acts like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Jurassic 5, and Cut Chemist. When she’s not making music, she hosts and directs Grounded TV and runs Jane Blaze Productions.

“There’s more of a spotlight on men in any industry, whether it’s the music business or fashion industry. We have to work twice as hard to get the same position,” she says. “It doesn’t mean we couldn’t rock a party just as well as a male DJ.”

Just as this story was going to “print,” DJ She confirmed that she will be participating in the showcase. Other DJs who’ve signed on include Tanya Tagaq, Peaches, Betti Forde, Librarian, Nina Mendoza, Lynx, B-Traits, Soom T, Isis Salam, Tank Girl and Mandai, with more to be announced. Media artists will include VJ Electrabelle, Julie Gendron, Shebnem Ozpeta, Claudia Medina and Krista Lomax.

MURS (born Nick Carter on March 16, 1978), is an underground mc from Mid-City Los Angeles. The name ‘MURS’ is an acronym for Making Underground Raw Shit. He is signed to the independent label Record Collection and is a member of the hip hop groups Living Legends, Felt, and the 3 Melancholy Gypsys. Murs is also part of a punk fusion band called The Invincibles with Jacksonville, Florida’s Whole Wheat Bread as lead vocalist.

DIAMOND D: Veteran hip-hop producer Diamond D has helped out with several of rap music’s most acclaimed LPs, including A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory and the Fugees’ The Score. In 1992, he recorded his first solo album, the underground classic Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop (which was released as by Diamond & the Psychotic Neurotics). Although it never sold very many copies, it increased his status, and he worked with Illegal, House of Pain, KRS-One, and the Pharcyde during the mid-’90s. A host of top-flight rappers returned the favor for his sophomore album, Hatred, Passion & Infidelity, including Busta Rhymes, Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest), and Pete Rock.
